ACCU 2012 – Lyon
This is Mr Michel Gendron, who gave us the second paper of this first day. Advisor to the means and technicalities of teaching at the University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR), he have presented the results of a study whose objective was to try to understand the choice of several Quebec universities to use the platform Moodle.
Eight teachers and some three hundred students have agreed to form and then use the Moodle platform. They were asked to answer a survey and teachers and a third of students responded (28% of total).
This survey shows that compared with the observed results of users of Claroline, there is no difference in connection with any platform, using their respective tools and their conviviality. According to users the learning time to using the Moodle platform is longer. It was also found that groups of students and two teachers were asked to leave the use of the Moodle platform for the next quarter.
Mr Michel Gendron have presented some tables showing the percentage of use of Claroline tools. A UQAR, tools “Documents and Links”, “Announcements” and “Results” stand out with 91, 82 and 46% utilization. The study reports on differences in the use of tools on both systems showing certain heaviness and lack of efficiency on the part of Moodle. Claroline bet on the simplicity and then contrast with some complexity encountered in the use of Moodle. On this point, certain institutions do not hesitate to call on specialists for its development. The presentation of Moodle, however, is more in phase with today’s web. In the ensuing discussion, we also mentioned that the tool “Exercises” is not much used and present limitations on the type of possible questions. In th campus UQAR, the tool is listed at 11%. Does it take to change this platform or want to modify this tool? How to change Claroline? While preserving its simplicity, how to improve its visual side and allow the integration of all tools in order to construct a complete course? Claroline and mobile devices, to where should we go? Reflection is open.

"... Claroline is somewhat easier to navigate and more intuitively designed than some other LMS's. In particular, the necessary information tends to appear on the main page... ... Easy to use. Good overview as manager, teacher and I am not sure as student. Support is helpful. We decided to build our courses with Claroline because it is easy to use..."
