Government gives 1M € for Claroline development

The General Bureau for Technology, Research and Energy of the Ministry of Walloon Region (Belgium, Europe) has decided to allow around 1M € to Claroline. Research and Development will be made in both ECAM (Ingeneers Higher Education) and University of Liège.

Claroline 1.4.2. is a minor bugs fixing release. It fixes mainly:
  • Upgrade function : you can now upgrade from any Claroline version up to 1.4.2. (see INSTALL.txt inside the package for more details),
  • Sluggishness on Mac Os X Internet Explorer: Claroline is still the fastest Course Management System, on any browser,
  • Admin interface : much more clear.

Bulgarian language by Stanislav Iliev

Stanislav Iliev stanislaviliev@hotmail.com has sent a fully featured Bulgarian language for Claroline. This drives Claroline up to 21 languages. Bulgarian will be integrated in Claroline 1.4.2. to appear today.
 
Warning : upgrade bug in Claroline 1.4.1

Claroline 1.4.1. has a sophisticated upgrade function that offers -during install process- to upgrade an existing campus running any older version of Claroline. However, the upgrade function doesn't work exactly as expected. If you need to upgrade, it is advised that you wait untill a patch or Claroline 1.4.2. to appear soon.

Claroline 1.4.1 is now available for download. This new version is essentially a maintenance release, fixing the last bugs reported by the Claroline community.

Claroline is the first Learning Management System to offer all the official languages of the European Union. This is due to a wide community effort where both universities, organisations and private individuals have joined their efforts.

Multilinguism is a true objective for the Claroline team in the perspective of a wide and effective cooperation between organisations coming from all european member States.

Emmanuel Pecquet has written a new student manual for Claroline 1.4. with screenschots, 2 days after 1.4. release. Did you work the whole night, Emmanuel? It available from Documentation page. Note that except English manuals, all are now in Word format to encourage community to improve them.

Claroline 1.4. is now available for download.

The main Claroline improvements are not visble. We have totally recoded the Claroline Kernel to be more stable, more secure and more modular.

  • SINGLE DB. Claroline is able now to work on a single DB. The single DB feature is an option to choose at install step.
  • LANGUAGE. New languages added. Claroline is now in 20 languages : Arab, Catalan, Croatian, Chinese, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Galician, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portugese, Spanish , Swedish, Thaï, Turkish.
  • LAYOUT. New 'liquid layout' spreading on all the window. Introduction of CSS system.
  • MAIN PAGE. New courses list display in a 'dynamic tree' system. It allows the main page to display faster, especially on servers with important number of courses.
  • QUIZZ. Totally new quizz tool with 4 different question types (multiple choice / mutiple answers / fill the gap / matching). The quizz tool also allows :
    • image attachment to question,
    • questions retrieval from another quizz,
    • random question list generation.
  • DOCUMENTS. It automatically detects IMG tags inside HTML file offering to upload the corresponding images.
  • WEB CHAT. simple chat with an archive function,
  • FORUMS. Better protection for private forums,
  • COURSE ENROLLMENT. Much simplified enrollment interface,
  • LOST PASSWORD. Allowing user to recover his/her personnal password,
  • ASSIGNMENT. New features allowing Course manager to remove, edit and hide assignements sent by students.
  • USER. New interface and new features allowing each Course manager to insert additional information headings inside its own course. Each course attendee can then fill these headings to provide the information.
  • ADMIN SECTION. Restore sytem to insert previously backed up courses. Most admin tools have been considerably simplified. Bulk user subscribe, possibility to deactivate self-registration,
  • IMPORT / EXPORT : backup and restore for Claroline-to-Claroline import, to prepare future IMS and WebCT-to-Claroline import,
  • TRACKING. The ezBoo statistics tool has been removed and a complete tracking system is implemented, recording every user's action on the platform,
